"A great photograph is one that fully
expresses what one feels in the deepest sense,
about what is being photographed, and is,
thereby a true manifestation of what one feels
about life in its entirety”

Growing
up in Australia, I developed a great love and
appreciation of the outdoors and nature, and
this is where I always knew I wanted to work.
Extensive travel throughout the UK and Europe
opened my eyes to the world, and it became clear photography was the
thing I was most passionate about.
Beauty is the driving force behind why I do
what I do. I love to be surrounded by it. I love
to capture it and ultimately I love to share it.
Initially drawn to photographing landscapes and
travel, I realised the importance of light.
During my two year photography course in
Melbourne, I stumbled across Cloudehill, one of
Australia's best gardens. I was so blown away by
this discovery, just around the corner from
where I grew up. There was such beauty, and I
couldn't believe no-one was there capturing it.
I met with the owner/designer Jeremy Francis and
asked to photograph the following morning at sunrise, as I would a
landscape. And, this was
the beginning of my great love and appreciation
of gardens.
Garden photography has since taken me to so many
beautiful places around the world and to so many
wonderful and talented people.
I love the human element to gardens, as
man-made landscapes, which are often the result
of great passion, knowledge, dedication and skill by garden
designers and garden enthusiasts. Gardens, I
think are very important. They bring a lot of
joy and sense of calm to many people's lives.
I have dedicated my work entirely to garden
photography for the past 5-6 years, and have
been lucky enough to be recognized in the
industry. In 2011, I received
second place in the IGPOTY competition for my
portfolio of Central
Australian images.
In 2010, I won
"Feature
Photographer of the Year", awarded by
the Garden Media Guild in the UK. This was for
my photographs of Kirstenbosch botanic garden in
Cape Town, South Africa, published in Gardens
Illustrated magazine. →

In 2008,
I won the title International
Garden Photographer of the Year
for my image,
Kenrokuen Gardens, Kanazawa , Japan
. It was the
prestigious IGPOTY competitions inaugural year, and my image was
selected from over 20,000 entries worldwide.
In 2009, I won
third place with my image of
King Johns Lodge,
England. In 2010, my
photograph of The Snake, James
van Sweden's home garden in Maryland, USA
won second place.

One of the greatest things coming out of my
work and the awards from the IGPOTY competition is the many
contacts I have made with people from all around the
world, often just letting me know they have
enjoyed my work. One lady simply thanked me, and
said seeing my image had made her happy that
day. This means a lot to me. I guess I see
garden photography as the key to my experience
in the world, and I'm very
lucky to be doing what I love.
Working freelance, I have featured in numerous
magazines in the UK and Australia, including:
Gardens Illustrated, The English Garden, Garden
Design Journal, Australian Country Style, Better
Homes and Gardens, Outdoor Design and Living,
ABC Gardening Australia, South Africa House &
Garden and various National
Trust publications.
My hope is to continue with magazine features
throughout the world. My dream is to also move
into books, and start securing my own book
commissions which I can really sink my teeth
into! My favourite thing to do is to travel and
photograph gardens as I go. I love to be blown away by the beauty
and diversity of gardens throughout the world
and if I'm lucky, also meet the people behind
them.
I am currently based on the Mornington Peninsula
in Victoria, but happy to look at accepting
commissions nationally or internationally. I
have just returned to Australia in August from a
wonderful 3.5 months trip to America, Canada and
Thailand. The highlight of the trip was
photographing The
High Line in New
York City for Gardens
Illustrated.
